Perfecting Your Skills
One Cast at a Time

The moment I cast my line into the water, I knew it wasn’t all about the spot; it was about technique and the right gear. Mistakes I have plentifully made, but with each of them, a new experience was learned. Some tips and suggestions regarding the gear that made a difference for me in Oualidia, Safi, and beyond are outlined here.

Surf Fishing in Morocco: How to Perfect It?

Surf fishing is accessible and rewarding along Morocco’s extensive coastline, where catches of seabream, mackerel, and seabass are common. Here are some hints that will assist you in making full use of this service:
Key Tips:
Timing: The best catches are early mornings or at dusk. Bait: Sardines for seabream and mackerel, live bait for the larger species. Casting: Beyond the breakers to deeper waters. Best Spots: Look for sandy, shelving beaches where fish sneak in close to shore.

Navigating Rocky Shores of Morocco

Cliff and rock fishing is a more adventurous activity and, in most instances, more challenging. However, southern coasts of Morocco make the sport rewarding, especially at Safi and Mirleft. Here’s how to go about it successfully:
Key Tips:
Safety first: beware of slippery rocks and sudden tides.
Gear: stronger rods and lines can bear the rocky seabeds.
Best Species: Grouper and Seabass are the common big fish.

The Right Rod & Reel
for Every Environment

Whether fishing from a beach in Oualidia or a rocky cliff in Safi, the right rod and reel can make all the difference. Here’s my breakdown of the essential gear for various settings.”
Recommendations:
Surf Fishing: Long, medium-power rods for distance casting.
Cliff Fishing: Heavy-duty rods to manage rougher waters.
Shimano Speedmaster Surf Rod; Daiwa BG Spinning Reel; Penn Battalion II Surf Rod; Penn Spinfisher VI; Okuma Cedros Spinning Rod; Scorpion, Barros, Mustad.etc.

Best Baits & Lures for Morocco’s Fish

While sardines have always been the traditional bait almost for all of Morocco, using the right artificial lures will make the difference in the southern waters.”
Natural Baits: Sardines for Seabream, squid for octopus, shrimps for mullet.
Lures: Bright-colored lures for clearer waters in southern Morocco, such as Dakhla.

Time Your Fishing Trip for Success

Fishing in Morocco is just about timing as much as it is about technique. The seasons and time of day can make all the difference in your quest for the perfect catch.”
Seasonal Guide:
Spring: Perfect time to catch Seabream, Mullet.
Summer: Tuna and dorado are found in the southern waters.
Fall: Great time for mackerel and bluefish.
Winter: Seabass are active during the cooler months.

Understanding Wind & Tide for

Better Catches

Cliff and rocky areas are exciting and, quite often, challenging places to fish. The coasts of Morocco southward usually pay off well, especially in Safi and Mirleft. Here’s how to go about this action:
Key Tips:
Safety First: Watch for slippery rocks and for high tides. Equipment: A strong rod and line are needed because most of the seabed is covered with rocks. Best Species: The places mentioned above are ideal for bigger fish such as grouper and seabass.

Our

fishermen’s tip:

Angling in Morocco is not just about the techniques or gear; it’s about the wisdom that comes from generations of fishermen who can show their hand at knowing the waters. To this end, I share some of the most valuable advice I have gotten from local fishermen during my trips: Oualidia: “Patience is key. Let the fish come to you-especially when targeting seabream.
Safi: “When the tide is low, use sardines. At this time, most of the time, the seabass are closer to the shore.”
Mirleft: “Rocky spots demand stronger lines, but the reward is always bigger fish.
These insights into fishing were gleaned from word of mouth by experienced locals and, hence, helped me grow as a fisherman. There’s something special about learning from those who’ve spent their entire lives along these coasts. Every time I fish, I carry these pieces of advice with me that help me navigate different conditions and maximize my catch.

Story:
The Safi experience: One morning, I rose above the port of Safi to shoot an old fisherman casting his line where the tide first started turning. Asked about his approach, he told me, “Timing is everything here. Seabream come in on a rising tide; that is when you want to be ready.” Lo and behold, one hour later, I landed my first of the day.
Agadir Wisdom: Upon arrival in Agadir, I met an elderly fisherman who swore that the only way to catch seabream is with squid bait. “When the waters are calm, squid releases some sort of smell that seabream can’t resist,” he explained. I tried it and immediately adopted it as my first choice for days when there is little or no swell.
